JOLIET – State Senator Rachel Ventura, Governor J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Transportation announced $91.8 million worth of road improvements coming to Will County.
“IDOT’s investment in local infrastructure is a much-needed step toward repairing the roads that carry our communities and our economy every day,” said Ventura (D-Joliet). “Heavy truck traffic has taken a toll on many of these routes, leaving rough, deteriorated surfaces that affect everyone who travels them. Investing in resurfacing and strengthening these truck routes will not only extend the life of our roads, but also provide a smoother, safer ride for motorists and improve the movement of freight throughout our communities.”
Passed in 2019, Rebuild Illinois is investing a total of $33.2 billion over six years into the state’s aging transportation system, creating jobs and promoting economic growth. Rebuild Illinois is not only the largest capital program in state history, but also the first that touches all modes of transportation: roads and bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.
Of the nine major projects in the Will county area, three are scheduled to be completed in 2026, with the remaining six projects completed between 2027-2030.
- U.S. 6 (Scott Street) from Washington Street to Ruby Street resurfacing and ADA improvements. Work began in 2024 and anticipated to be completed this fall. Daily lane closures are in place.
- U.S. 30 (Cass Street) at Des Plaines River bridge superstructure replacement. Work began in 2025 and is anticipated to be completed in 2027. A full closure is in place during construction.
- U.S. 30 (Lincoln Highway) from Center Street to Collins Street and Center Street from U.S. 30 to Jefferson Street resurfacing. Work began in 2024 and anticipated to be completed this fall. Daily lane closures are in place resurfacing.
- Illinois Route 171 (Collins Street) from Cass Street to Division Street Work is anticipated to be started this fall and be completed in 2027. Daily lane closures will be in place.
- U.S. 45 from Colorado Avenue to Old Frankfort Way resurfacing. Work is anticipated to begin this fall and scheduled to be completed in 2027. Daily lane closures are in place.
- Interstate 57 at Pauling Road (overpass) new bridge deck, shoulder repair, retaining wall, culvert extension and culvert repair. Work began in 2025 and is expected to be completed later this fall. A detour using Illinois 50, Monee Manhattan Road and South Harlem Avenue will be in place.
- U.S. 30 (Jefferson Street) At Des Plaines River new bridge deck and bridge repair. Work is anticipated to begin in 2028 and be completed in 2030. A detour will be in place.
- Illinois 53 (Chicago Street) from U.S. 52 (Doris Avenue) to West Manhattan Road Work is anticipated to begin in spring 2029 and be completed in fall 2029. Daily lane closures will be in place.
- Jackson Street at the Des Plaines River bridge superstructure rehabilitation. Work is anticipated to begin in 2027 and be completed in 2030. A detour will be in place.
