JOLIET - State Senator Rachel Ventura announced $126,000 will be awarded to two District 43 organizations thanks to funds appropriated by Senator Ventura and the federal Library Services and Technology Act.
“Everyone has the right to obtain basic literacy skills, and these literacy grants ensures those programs are available to anyone who wishes to partake,” said Ventura (D-Joliet). “Illinois Workers in Action and Joliet Junior College are committed to ensuring that children and adults have access to programs that improve essential skills.”
The Illinois Workers in Action is receiving $50,000 family literacy grant for programs that help parents and children build basic skills together and separately through partnerships among educational agencies, child-at-risk agencies and public libraries.
Joliet Junior College is receiving a $76,600 adult volunteer literacy grant which is used for one-on-one instruction provided by volunteer tutors to help adults improve their reading, writing, math and language skills.
“Libraries are cornerstones of our communities, providing Illinoisans with access to information, technology, educational resources and opportunities to learn and grow,” Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias said. “These grants strengthen our libraries and literacy programs and help protect the fundamental Right to Read, ensuring people of all ages and abilities can access the information and resources they need to succeed.”
