Senator VenturaJOLIET - To encourage students to keep up with their reading even while on summer break, State Senator Rachel Ventura is launching a Summer Book Club for children and students who live in the 43rd State Senate District, including those in Joliet Public School District 86 and Valley View Community Unit School District 365.

“Reading over the summer helps to prevent learning loss and prepare students to meet the upcoming school year fully prepared,” said Ventura (D-Joliet). “My Summer Book Club encourages children to follow their own interests, enjoy the adventure, and receive a sweet treat!”

The Summer Book Club requires students to read eight books of their choice during the summer break, record the names of the books on a form, and return the form to Ventura’s district office by Aug. 14.

“Summer reading plays a vital role in helping students maintain and strengthen their literacy skills while school is out of session,” said Megan Millen, executive director at Joliet Public Library. “Programs like Senator Ventura’s Summer Book Club encourage young people to discover the joy of reading, explore new ideas, and stay engaged in learning throughout the summer months. Public libraries are proud to partner in these efforts by providing free access to books, programs, and resources that support readers of all ages.”

Ventura urges interested residents to call her office with any additional questions. Parents and students in the 43rd District can also find a copy of the Summer Book Club brochure at their local library.
