SPRINGFIELD — Following the visit from Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, many Illinois lawmakers and community advocates gathered to say, “Go Home Noem.”
Ventura stood in solidarity with Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, Senate President Don Harmon, House Speaker Chris Welch, and dozens of lawmakers who delivered remarks at the rally held outside the Capitol.
Attorney General Kwame Raoul and Governor JB Pritzker have filed lawsuits to fight against the federal administration’s attacks on human rights — a fight Ventura has vowed to carry forward.
Ventura released the following statement after participating in a Wednesday morning press conference protesting the visit:
“I stand in solidarity with the many immigrant families that are our friends, our neighbors, residents and colleagues. Illinois is a welcoming state, but we will not welcome hate nor lies.
“I will continue to fight against an administration that sows fear and cruelty; one that violates our due process, our freedoms and our values.
"Using fear-mongering tactics will not intimidate us nor shake our determination in remaining as a welcoming state. Illinois will not be intimidated by bullies.
“We will continue to protect our most vulnerable communities. We will especially continue to work on and defend legislation, like the Trust Act, the Illinois Way Forward Act, access to housing, health care and driver’s licenses for all. We will protect those who are being scapegoated by this administration.
“Hate and chaos have no place in our governance. Love, compassion and dignity will always guide our work. Light is the only thing that can chase away the dark. Let our light and love shine bright in Illinois.”
